Thousands to Take Action for the Environment Throughout San Diego County on Saturday, September 26

What: Approximately 6,000 volunteers countywide are expected to participate in cleanups within their own neighborhoods for the 36th annual Coastal Cleanup Day. The event will be hosted virtually by I Love A Clean San Diego and produced through many close-to-home volunteer efforts. The day’s event kicks off through a Facebook Live and IGTV broadcast to get participants motivated for the day and to share important cleanup tips and safety information. Senate President Pro Tempore, Senator Toni G. Atkins will provide an official welcome as part of the morning kickoff. Volunteers are encouraged to participate at any time during the day. Free online registration is now open at CleanupDay.org

When:  Saturday, September 26, 2020 with Facebook Live Kickoff at 9:00 a.m. on I Love A Clean San Diego’s Facebook Page @ILoveACleanSD.

Where: Any location in San Diego County volunteers choose to clean and protect. No matter where people live in San Diego County, we all live in one of its 11 watersheds that lead to the coast.

Why:  80% of ocean pollution begins inland. By 2050 it is estimated there will be more plastic pollution by weight than fish in the world’s oceans. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the form of masks are expected to be high among litter totals. Increased packaging and takeout containers are producing more litter and pollution due to consumer purchases during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the data from this event we will see how the shifts in behavior due to coronavirus are impacting pollution totals throughout the county, leading to potential solutions.

When litter is left behind, it enters our local watersheds and flows to the Pacific Ocean, becoming a harmful threat to the health of both marine wildlife and people. This event serves as a learning opportunity to show how damaging litter and pollution are for our environment and to encourage protection of the region we call home.
