Stephanie: I’ve really missed going to the movies lately and I’ve been eating healthier, but I know I’m going to have that movie popcorn as soon as I can. Obviously popcorn isn’t all that bad for you but at the movies it is. Do you think having snacks like that can really mess up your progress?
Megan: Movie theater popcorn is pretty tasty, but is totally loaded with calories and tons of fake butter. It isn’t the same as the bag we microwave at home. Even a small popcorn WITHOUT butter has 225 calories and 11 grams of fat. Make it a medium size and now it’s at 430 calories and 20 grams of fat. So let’s hope you don’t get a large which has over 1,000 calories and 41 grams of fat. We know that we can share but when places offer free refills, well how much are you really eating after all?? Too much. Are you having soda with it too? And imagine if you did add butter…. So all in all, movie popcorn is a sometimes food and since you go to the movies sometimes you might be able to get it away with having it as a little cheat here and there.
I’m sure you have heard before the rules of moderation and portion control. The problem is that you keep reaching for more and then suddenly it’s gone. You should enjoy your trip to the movies, just be sure to stick to your will power and don’t ever make yourself feel deprived when trying to eat healthy or you won’t stick to it.
