Eric: I hear mixed reviews on coffee. Every month it changes whether we should drink it or not. What is your opinion is, is coffee good or bad for you?Megan: As a coffee connoisseur, I don’t know that I could live without. Coffee certainly is one of the most popular drinks in the world. It does contain antioxidants, has been shown to lower the risk of type two diabetes, it may prevent against liver cirrhosis, and can lower the risk for kidney stones developing. Caffeine can help with concentration and focus for performance. it is a natural fat burner. Of course all this sounds too good to be true and there has to be a catch. Well, coffee can elevate blood pressure, disrupt sleep, and heavy coffee drinking can interfere with calcium absorption which can increase the risk for osteoporosis. One might ask how much is too much? That answer varies from person to person. “Coffee jitters” are a real feeling and most know what time of day to skip a cup of Joe or else they can’t go to bed at a decent time. In today’s coffee lover world, also watch out for all the extras with sugars and creams. I like 1-2 cups in the morning and catch my wind at lunch time with 1-2 cups more. There’s always decaf to fall back on too, if you love the taste but need to cut back. In the end, it’s that tell-take saying, “Everything in moderation”. That goes for coffee too. If you have a question for Megan and want to be featured, email her at [email protected] and check out her website www.everybodysfitoceanside.com
