Michelle: I’m super excited for my first pregnancy and I do want to continue exercising. What are some of the tips and things I will need to adjust to keep working out?
Megan: Congratulations. The intensity of your workouts will need to change. Being aware of your breathing and try not to elevate your heart rate too high, and your doctor can tell you a safe range for your heart rate during exercise so be sure to ask. After the first trimester you will no longer be able to do exercises on your back for the safety of the baby, so be sure to use an elevation like an inclined bench. The pool is a great way to avoid any back strain and it’s typically safer to now use stationary equipment like a treadmill or stationary bike to ensure you are near help and you will be using the bathroom more frequently too. Keep moving it is so important for you and your child’s health. Best of luck.
