Jeremy: Why is eating white bread considered bad for you?
Megan: Ever heard of Wonder Bread? Rumor has it the name came to be because of the mystery ingredients that makes you wonder how the bread can have such a long shelf life. White bread is a simple carbohydrate which means it has more sugar that easily and quickly breaks down in your body. Nutritionally, there isn’t a lot of fiber so your body basically gets a little sugar high from the glucose but then leaves you feeling hungry again soon after. These are called empty calories because again, nutritionally, not much is being contributed to the health of your body which means you aren’t putting the best fuel in your tank. That’s why when you have an upset stomach sometimes a piece of white toast can sooth it because your body can easily get some calories, even if not the best type.
