Layla: I love snacking on carrots and sometimes it’s my snack 2 or 3 times a day just because it’s so easy for me when working. Of course everyone laughs and says I’m going to turn orange. Do carrots really turn your skin orange??
Megan: Overeating carrots could possibly turn the palms of your hands and/or the soles of your feet orange (and rarely some people’s face has an orange tint) because they contain carotenemia also called carotenoderma. Beta carotene is a pigment that enters the bloodstream and can show up, but this is not harmful and can be reversed. You won’t get sick and it isn’t a health risk, but it’s that general rule of too much of anything not being good for you, i.e., the orange skin. It all comes down to how much in excess you are eating the carrots and how your body responds.
