Patricia: I can’t seem to eat meat as much anymore. I just can’t stomach it so I need other protein sources. What are good protein alternatives to meat?
Megan: Protein is necessary for our body’s musculoskeletal system and to meet your energy demands. Other good sources include eggs, Greek yogurt, edamame, plant based meats, nuts, cheese, hummus, beans, and lentils. Keep in mind that not all protein is created equally and that there are other macronutrients that need to be in balance. For example nuts are high in fat while beans are high in carbohydrates. It takes a much larger serving of beans to obtain the same amount you would from a piece of chicken. Be sure to read labels and be sure to watch out for portion control. Many protein powders can be a good tool because they mainly contain just protein without other additives. Try to eat a variety and see what works best for you.
