Jim: My buddies and I have been watching the Olympics and professional sports and then thinking about our own bodies and playing sports. We are curious what age is your body at when peak athletic performance happens?
Megan: Generally, most research has pointed towards between the ages of 20 to 30 being peak athletic performance years in terms of physiological abilities. Athletic ability seems to decline after age 26. Different sports require different skills such as endurance, speed, and/or power. Think about someone graduating college around age 22/23 then entering a professional sport. It is usually those years up to age 30 they are at their best and in the spotlight. Ageing then sets in and the “youth” factor declines, not quickly, but things like recovering from injuries don’t happen as quickly.
