Marie Waldron, State Assemblymember — It is obvious that Californians need relief from high gas prices now. Gas prices are a major driver of inflation – while the cost for all consumer items has risen by 7.9% in the last year, gas prices have jumped by 38%.
Despite repeated efforts to suspend the state’s gas tax, the legislature has still not acted and more pain will be felt immediately with a scheduled increase coming this July. There is discussion about competing proposals to rebate taxpayers.
I represent a rural district where many residents hit the road for an hour or more to commute to their jobs. They need real relief right now!
That is why I joined with my colleagues in the bipartisan, bicameral Problem Solvers Caucus to come up with a new proposal to suspend the gas tax for one full year and guarantee all the savings go directly to drivers.
In other states, like Maryland, the vote to suspend state gas taxes has been bipartisan, if not unanimous, and drivers in the State of Maryland reaped the rewards with more than 98% of the tax relief going straight to their wallets.
The California Problem Solvers Gas Tax Relief Proposal is a strategy that will work for Californians and lay the groundwork for more legislation to make sure our state is affordable again.
