El Camino Over Bishop

El Camino seeded 7th in the CIF are known for pulling big surprises, upsets and miracles. During the 2019 San Diego CIF Football Tournament with wins over 2nd seed San Pasqual Eagles 42-21 in the quarter finals, 3rd seed Vista Panthers 35-21 in the semi final round.  

In the championship round held at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, the “Miracle” Camino Wildcats at 8-6 went against a high powered Bishop School from La Jolla, trailing 59-36, quarterback Kiah Reid (rushing 10 carries for 65 yards scored on a 21 yard passing, 12 of 18 completions for 285 yards). scoring 1 touchdown run of 19 yards and 3 touchdown passes to Jacob Gathright (2 receptions for 51 yards,1 touchdown reception for 19 yards to tie the game at 59-59, completion of 32 yards to go up 67-59, 1 pass to Alex Fetko (6 receptions for 200 yards 2 touchdowns of 26 and 38 yards. Zion Jackson 7 carried for 109 yards (1st touchdown for 28 yards) and scored on a 7 yard run to defeat the previously undefeated Knights of Bishop’s School in a high scoring 75-59 game.

Michael Hobbs on his teams performance:  “It feels good to win a CIF title. This is the second under me and we want every season to be a good one. El Camino’s way of playing good hard football.”  “In tonight’s game all of the players came out in the second half and had the confidence that they could win the game.”  “After trailing 59-36 Kiah Reid, our quarterback, made good plays along with the offensive line as they protected him. Kiah made nice reads and our offense took care of the game.”

“Our kids had the confidence at this point of the game if they continued to battling knew theyhad the game.”  “Our squad never believed it was a miracle they believed they could win. During the season we had some tough losses and at the end of the season it prepared us on how to win. “We lost 3 different games on the last play that were key but those games set us up for the playoffs.”  said Coach Hobbs. 

Other El Camino performers Noah Sega 26 carries for 125 yards, 
 El Camino has won 11 CIF San Diego Section Titles.  This is second time that Michael Hobbs has won a CIF Section Title being a lower seed. His first since 2017
