Everything You Need to Know About Downsizing Your Home

Do you find that your current living space is too big for your needs? If you would feel more comfortable in a home that is a little bit smaller, it might be time to consider downsizing. There are countless benefits to downsizing your home, such as lower utility bills, less maintenance and cleaning to worry about, and reduced mortgage or rent. Sound good? Here are the details that you should be aware of before taking the plunge and planning your move.

Make sure you are ready to downsize

Some people quickly get used to having plenty of space and can find it difficult to adjust to a smaller home as a result. Therefore, it is imperative that you objectively assess your reasons for considering the change. It is also vital to keep in mind that downsizing within your current neighborhood might not be as easy as you expect. So, unless you are open to moving somewhere entirely different, try to weigh up your options before putting your current home on the market.

Another important consideration is the value of your home. It is always a good idea to sell your property when the market is tipping in the seller’s favor so that you can benefit from a higher profit and increase the chances of getting your asking price. If you are relatively close to paying off your mortgage in full, it might also be worthwhile waiting it out from a financial perspective.

Preparing for the move

Once you have decided that downsizing is the right choice for your family, you can move on to adequately preparing for the move. There are a number of aspects to consider in this regard. For example, you should take the time to slowly declutter your home, organizing your belongings into categories; for example, “donate,” “throw away,” “repurpose,” “sell,” etc. The more items you get rid of, the fewer items you will have to move to your new property and the cheaper the process will be. Obviously, your new home will be a lot smaller than your existing one, so it is necessary to be ruthless when it comes to saying goodbye to the items for which you no longer have a use.

If possible, it is always recommended to start packing well in advance to avoid stress during that final week leading up to moving day. The best course of action is to look into renting Houston storage units and placing your pre-packed boxes inside there until it is time to load up the moving truck.

Finally, try to start viewing potential new properties before you put your current house up for sale. This will give you a pretty decent idea of what options are out there and will help you to put together a list of your “must-haves” and your “nice-to-haves.”

Downsizing can be a relatively simple process if you take the time to plan it properly and don’t make any hasty decisions. Best of luck as you embark upon the journey!
