Willauer-Contributing Writer-Friday, February 7, 2020-The Dome at Palomar College-San Marcos, CA-The Lady Comets of Palomar Junior College continued their 5 game winning streak behind former Mission Hills Grizzly alums Melena Bland’s 17 points, Grizzly teammate Aaliyah Taylor 15 points, Elexis Espina from Ramona with 12 points and former San Marcos Knight alum Dee Dee Valenzuena had 11 as they defeated San Diego City College at 11-14 by a 85-44 score.
Melena Bland 17 points for Palomar: “We’ve put in a lot of work while trying to meet our goals and not falling short.’ “When we led by 7 points at half-time 22-15 we didn’t play our best in the half, we battled through that mental lapse with confidence in that we needed to do better shooting while improving our defense.”
“I felt I shot the well when I play defense and crashing the boards along with talking to my teammates as they helped me improve my shooting a lot.”
“Aaliyah Taylor and Nikki Mayoral grew up together while in high school having that connection. Making it easier for us to play together as a team.” “We are playing the Spartans of Mira Costa which is a big test for us, the last time we played them was at our place we lost by 4 points. We are practicing hard working on our shooting and defense making sure not to turn the ball over.”
For San Diego City Kathryn Monk Coronado High led with 11 points, 10 each by Alissa Wolfblack and Lajaei West from Chula Vista contributed with 10 points each With the win the Lady Comets of Palomar improve to 22-2 and after a 55-51 defeat will be at Mira Costa in a key basketball game.
Mira Costa Women defeated Grossmont 75-39-MC was led by Julie Iman 17 points, Savannah Beasley 14 points, and 13 by Chynna Cochran.
