SAN DIEGO – The San Diego League today named San Diego Christian College Graduate Assistant Niko Holm as Head Coach of the Waveriders for the 2020 season. Chief Operating Officer Connor Little made the announcement.

Holm, 23, was in his first season as a Graduate Assistant with SDCC in 2020 before the Coronavirus canceled NAIA and Golden State Athletic Conference action. He coached third base and worked with infielders and all hitters. The San Diego native began his college coaching career in the summer of 2018 as an assistant with the Bend Elks of the West Coast League. He then served as a volunteer assistant at Palomar College in 2019, working with catchers and all hitters.

“Niko is yet another young and hungry coach who we are excited to have lead a group of student athletes this summer,” Little said. “His passion for the game and for teaching is pretty apparent, whether you’re in the dugout, on the field, or in the stands.”

“There’s no place I’d rather be coaching baseball in the summer than in my hometown of San Diego,” Holm said. “I can’t wait to get to work and help the athletes in their development. It’s going to be a fun, productive summer for the Wave Riders.”

Holm played collegiately at Palomar (2015-16) and Santa Clara University (2017-18). He earned ABCA/Rawlings Second-Team Southern California-Pacific Association All-Region honors in 2016. He also collected First-Team All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference accolades that season. Holm received his B.A. in Communication, along with a minor in history, in 2018. He is currently working on his Master’s in Organization Leadership at SDCC.

Holm is a 2014 graduate of Rancho Bernardo High School, where he was classmates with Alex Jackson, who was a first-round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners that year and made his major league debut in 2019 with the Atlanta Braves. The 2013 Rancho Bernardo team with Holm and Jackson won the CIF San Diego Section Open Division Championship.

The San Diego League is a collegiate baseball summer league founded in 2019 that has a significant emphasis on analytics. Its main partners are Blast Motion and Rapsodo. Corporate offices are located in Rancho Bernardo and games are played at Cal State – San Marcos. The 2020 season begins Saturday, May 30 and the All-Star Game is scheduled to be played at Petco Park on Friday, July 10.

Southern California’s Premier Summer Collegiate Baseball League…The San Diego League was created in 2019 to provide college baseball players a summer league option that not just utilizes, but emphasizes analytics to assist in player development. Talented players from all over the country come to America’s Finest City to start – or continue – building their individual analytical profile with Blast Motion and/or Rapsodo technologies. Ultimately, and most importantly, the players learn what the numbers actually mean and how to implement them in their training.

We are still planning for our 2020 season, which begins May 30, to be played as scheduled. That said, we are closely monitoring the Coronavirus situation and we will adjust the season, as necessary, should any government-issued mandates be in place closer to Opening Day.
