Shawn Hobson ….   VISTA – Those who like to hike the hills and visit the duck pond at Buena Vista Park were perhaps caught off guard by the overwhelming amount of people there Thursday afternoon.

That’s because the relatively quiet park played host to a North County Middle School Cross Country Open, a meet where 579 kids from 24 schools ran the trails and hills on a 1.74-mile course.

“Our objective is to get the kids running,” Michael Hughes said. “I actually expected about 100 more at the meet today, but our largest team, San Elijo, did not show.”
Hughes runs the clock and keeps track of the results. He’s been doing it for years. Hughes attends all the middle school events. There’s seven meets on the North County Cross Country schedule this season.

Many of the 6th, 7th and 8th graders may eventually run for high school teams, and this event was a great start for them. The course is shorter than the 3.1-mile course that the high school kids ran in last week’s Avocado League cluster, in which only six schools participated at the park. The middle school event was six times larger and parking was limited on Shadowridge Drive.

The Open had four races. The 6th and 7th grade girls ran the first race, and the 6th and 7th boys ran second. The 8th grade girls raced third, and the 8th grade boys ran last. Team scores are tallied by the way the top-five runners finish. Some of the schools did not have the necessary five runners to tally a team score. In that case, the team forfeits, but it doesn’t diminish the results of the runners who compete on teams with less than five runners.

The next middle school event is at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas on Oct. 15.
