The match started with the 152-pound weight class at the RBV gym, and that’s when RBV senior Seth Samuelson secured a 10-2 major decision over Johnny MIller. The Longhorns took a quick 4-0 lead, which was a lead they would not relinquish.
The Longhorns, who are ranked No. 2 in Division I of the CIF San Diego Section, proceeded to win the next three weight classes before Vista senior Cesar Mariscol grappled RBV senior Sean Hartshorn to a 8-2 decision. The Panthers won the next two matches, narrowing the lead to 19-12 after Vista heavyweight David Quiroz beat Ethan Olmos with a 1-0 decision.
That’s when the RBV lighter weights began their dominance. RBV junior Oscar Nellis, who is ranked 18th in the state by thecaliforniawrestler.com in the 16-pound weight class, pinned Killan Perrigon in 53 seconds. In the next match, RBV sophomore Bernie Truax won by forfeit. Truax is ranked No. 36 in the state.
It was the last dual meet of the regular season, but RBV advanced to the CIF-SDS Division I Dual Championships. The Longhorns will compete next against Mission Hills at Mira Mesa High School on February 13 at 10 a.m.
