Official List of Seashells Designated by States in the United States

TR Robertson — There are 15 states in the U.S. that have officially designated specific seashells as part of their state insignia. Each of the shells was chosen to represent maritime states, based on the fact that that shell appears in the state. The shell was also selected either because that species of shell has commercial importance as a local seafood item or because of the shell’s beauty, rarity, size and other features. Interestingly, Washington and California have not designated a shell unique to their state. North Carolina, in 1965, was the first state to designate an official state shell, the Scotch bonnet. The following is the list of states and the shell that has been selected for that state. Pictures of the shells also are shown.
