LOS ANGELES – Javelin throwers took center stage for the Cougars in the debut appearance for the Cal State San Marcos track & field teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track and Field Championships at Cal State L.A. on Thursday. The program, in its 17th season, is competing in NCAA Division II postseason for the first time.
Domenique Barnes started the competition off for the Cougars in the women’s javelin, closing out a solid freshman campaign with a throw of 31.81m that was the 14th-longest in the contest.
In the men’s javelin, Patrick Holstrom led the Cougars with a throw of 47.68m that was the 10th-longest of the day. Josh Maffei threw 45.71m, his second-best of the season and the 13th-longest throw in the competition.
As candidacy members of the CCAA, Cal State San Marcos is able to compete but not eligible to earn points for the team championship.
Action for day two begins on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. with Michelle Fekete in the women’s long jump and Travis Linder in the men’s 3000m.
