Attendees will have the unique opportunity to discover local zero waste businesses, and can enter an opportunity drawing to win a variety of eco-conscious prizes!

What is Zero Waste? — Zero Waste is a goal to emulate sustainable natural cycles. It is a process of making daily conscious choices to value our resources and eliminate items from the landfill, which are quickly filling up. The three major landfills in San Diego County have projected closures of 2030, 2034, and 2042, respectively. Eliminating the use of disposable items, donating items in a reusable/good condition, modifying items to serve a different purpose, repairing broken items, and recycling are all great ways to reduce what we send to the landfill.

Why is Zero Waste important?

·         San Diegans generate about 5 lbs. of trash per person per day – the most in the state.

·         Landfills like the Miramar Landfill are composed of reusable, repairable, and recyclable materials, indicating a need to change our practices to extend the use of the landfill and eliminate resources from ending up in the landfill.

·         Zero waste living reduces exposure to toxic chemicals (cleaning supplies, BPA, etc.)

·         Zero waste living mitigates the rate of climate change (factories produce CO2 and other greenhouse gases; composting removes CO2 from the atmosphere)

ILACSD believes San Diegans have the solution; small, daily actions toward zero waste will collectively protect our resources, our environment, and our health. We need everyone to keep items out of the landfill by reducing, reusing, repurposing, donating, and recycling. Please visit https://zerowastefair.org/ to learn more and register for the event.
