San Diego North Economic Development County has updated their quick fact sheets about key North County industries, adding a new report for “Tourism and Hospitality” this year. The following 9 industries are critical drivers of the local economy. North County also is considered a “hotspot” for talent in most of these industries, which means North County employs more workers than the national average for an area this size:

  • Above National Average:
    • Biotechnology and Biomedical Manufacturing (+84%)
    • Defense and Transportation Technology (+37%)
    • Manufacturing (+24%)
    • Communications and Information Technology (+15%)
    • Tourism and Hospitality (+15%)
    • Craft Brewing and Beverages (+11%)
  • Below National Average:
    • General Business and Administration (-11%)
    • Software (-25%)
    • Healthcare (-33%)

The following industries have been growing over the last 5 years (2018-2023):

  • Craft Brewing and Beverages (+12%)
  • Healthcare (+9%)
  • General Business and Administration (+5%)
  • Tourism and Hospitality (+5%)
  • Biotechnology and Biomedical Manufacturing (+2%)
  • Manufacturing (+2%)

The region has seen a dip in these industries during the same time period:

  • Communications and Information Technology (-5%)
  • Defense and Transportation Technology (-6%)
  • Software (-3%)
