Many 40- and 30-something millennials have no choice but to build homes in their parents’ backyards

Enter the ADU.Diverse patterns of living arrangements across families, communities, and plots of land were far more common in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

To accommodate these living situations, a range of housing types emerged: multifamily apartment complexes, housing cooperatives, and duplexes and triplexes.

There were also accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, which are sometimes called granny flats, backyard homes, in-law suites, or backyard cottages.

These terms all refer to essentially the same thing: an additional unit of housing on a single lot, typically smaller in square footage than the main residence. FULL ARTICLE

Architect Heidi Richardson created a stylish and space-saving unit in her Northern California backyard.

Heidi resides in California’s Marin County. Q & A: 2024 NEW ADU LAWS

QUESTION: As a Homeowner, do I still have to live on the property?

ANSWER: No. As of January 2024, Owner Occupancy is a thing of the past.  Owner occupancy refers to a requirement that if a homeowner builds an ADU, they must live on the property, either in the ADU or the main residence. Thanks to AB 976, the owner occupancy requirement has been permanently eliminated in California.  This will come as a big relief for homeowners that are looking to turn their properties into an investment piece.
