HAPPY POLLINATOR WEEK!

The summer flowers are in full bloom and the birds and butterflies are soaking up the sun! Birds, bats, bees, butterflies, beetles, and other small mammals that pollinate plants are responsible for bringing us one out of every three bites of food. Pollinating animals travel from plant to plant carrying pollen on their bodies in a vital interaction that allows the transfer of genetic material critical to the reproductive system of most flowering plants – the very plants that

  • bring us countless fruits, vegetables, and nuts,
  • ½ of the world’s oils, fibers and raw materials;
  • prevent soil erosion,
  • and increase carbon sequestration

Here are a few ways you can help pollinators today:

  • Plant for pollinators- utilize native plants and plant in clusters for the pollinators to find.
  • Reduce of eliminate the use impact of pesticides
  • Support local bees and beekeepers
  • Shop at your local farmers markets

Come by the Discovery Center and visit our Pollinator Garden! We currently, have a Monarch Butterfly Exhibit and we have already released 8 butterflies! On your visit, take a peek at our Milkweed and see if you can find any caterpillars. If you find any, bring them inside to our exhibit so we can watch them make their chrysalis and metamorphize into a butterfly! If there are butterflies in our exhibit, with the help of one of our team members, you can release a Monarch back into our Pollinator Garden!
