Megan: The best time to have the shake is after the workout. The majority of protein powders are a complete protein source meaning they contain all 9 essential amino acids. These amino acids are what build muscle. When you exercise, you actually break down muscle fibers, almost tearing them apart as you work them. The repair and grow period is after the workout and that protein shake is giving your body the fuel to repair and grow for you. I recommend no later than 1 hour after. You can have a shake anytime, but for specific muscle related purposes it would be post workout.
