Megan: The two can be related depending upon a couple reasons. Sometimes dieting, particularly fad or crash diets, can lack nutrients your body needs for many bodily functions. The body does need whole foods including protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Too little of any of them should not be long term. This is especially true for low protein diets. This can also happen after weight loss surgeries because again, certain foods are lacking or not being consumed in sufficient quantities. Consider your diet and maybe seek the help of a registered dietitian to sort through what nutrients could be missing.
