Mariel: My asthma is terrible and not improving so I was prescribed prednisone. I want to keep working out because I’m trying to lose weight, but this medicine makes me feel like I’m gaining weight. How does prednisone affect weight?
Megan: Fluid retention is a common side effect of taking prednisone which can make someone feel bloated or full. This is because steroids tend to affect electrolyte levels which throws off water balance and metabolism. A low sodium diet would be recommended in general, but especially while taking steroids. That being said, the weight gain doesn’t necessarily have to stay and can be temporary until the medication is no longer needed. Get healthy and don’t always pay attention to the scale.
