Trish: My son got his earlobe pierced and it’s the type where the lobe is huge with a circle ring. Will his ear be permanently damaged from this?

Megan: This sounds like a gauge piercing and there are different sizes when people choose to do this. Ear cartilage does not grow back nor does it in other places such as the knee. The skin has been significantly stretched. Typically a plastic surgeon will need to fix this area with synthetic skin. This is a reconstruction type surgery. Therefore, it’s always good to consider the long term outlook when we do anything seemingly permanent to your bodies. That’s not to say it can’t be fixed, rather, it won’t be fixed all on its own.
