Karen: I started to run again and my back is bothering me. Can running hurt your back??
Megan: Yes running may be using your legs, but it’s the repetitive stress and impact of the legs hitting the surface that can bother the back. Typically the person has an existing back problem such as low back pain or some degree of a herniated disc. Duration is a factor as well because the longer you run the longer the back is feeling the discomforting motion. Sciatica can also be aggravated by running. You can still run and avoid pain but you will have to be the judge of the endurance and surface that you are choosing to run on. It may be trial and error until you find a balance that lets you run but not pay for it the next day.
