Sheryl: Some of my family is doing the keto diet. I don’t totally understand it, so what does it mean to be in ketosis?
Megan: Ketosis is when ketones are elevated in the body. Ketones are produced from fat, hence, why eating a high fat diet is the approach. Normally, the body uses glucose (sugar) for energy, but during ketosis the body is using ketones from fat for energy. Your blood sugar is low from this diet because of the lack of consumption of carbohydrates which have glucose. Therefore, the body switches to ketones. You need about less than 50 grams of carbs per day for this to occur. Research is mixed on safety, benefits, and risks of the keto diet, but various people have had results that work. It is not meant to be long term.
