Brittany: Different foods and drinks I like have sucralose in them but the calories and sugar are way less than other things I could be having. Is sucralose bad for you?
Megan: Generally, sucralose is considered safe but with caution. It is like sugar but is highly processed. Research is controversial and conflicting. Some studies show sucralose doesn’t affect blood sugars and insulin levels, while others study say the opposite. There’s debate if sucralose affects your gut by distorting microbiomes and causing inflammation. It is said to release harmful chemicals at high temperatures. There have also been links to cancer. Even though the FDA considers sucralose safe, long terms and excess (like anything) may or may not harm the body. You are putting something unnatural into your systems and asking them to break down and digest them. It seems difficult to avoid sucralose and other artificial sweeteners and sometimes they are considered the lesser of two evils (sugar) when trying to lose weight. It’s entirely up to you and your body may or may not be affected. There’s not a straightforward answer to the safety of sucralose, which in and of itself, could be your answer right there.
