Darian: I know I have way more sugar than I should per day between my sweet tooth and just everything I add to my coffee. How much sugar should a person limit themself to per day?
Megan: The truth is that we should be avoiding added sugars as much as we can. According to the American Heart Association teh upper limit of daily sugar intake is as follows:
- Men: 150 calories per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons)
- Women: 100 calories per day (25 grams or 6 teaspoons)
This seems like a lot, but one can of Coke has 140 calories from sugar and a Snickers has 120 calories from sugar. Many foods, especially processed ones and those with high fructose corn syrup are loaded with sugar. We really have to be mindful.
