Kelli: My mom loves to put butter on everything, especially when she makes sandwiches and toast them. It does taste really good, but I’m trying to be healthier. Should I tell her to use butter or margarine as the healthier option?
Megan: The answer can be controversial. Butter is high in saturated fat and margarine is high in unsaturated fat and sometimes trans fat. The best answer would be a trans-fat free margarine option, so you need to read nutritional labels. You also want to choose products that are made with healthier oils like olive oil. Butter made from grass-fed cow’s milk would be the best option for butter choices. There isn’t a clear winner, so you truly have to read the labels and only consume either of them in moderation. That being said, you may want to bring your mom the butter or margarine she is going to cook with for you.
