Jim: I went to the doctor and she was concerned with some blood results that came back indicating me possibly having fatty liver disease. She will run more tests but what causes fatty liver disease?
Megan: This condition is called hepatitis steatosis and occurs when fat actually builds up in the liver. For persons who drink alcohol in excess they would have alcoholic fatty liver disease and for those who don’t drink, they would have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Other causes besides alcohol could be high blood sugar, insulin resistance, having high amounts of fat in the blood, obesity, sometimes pregnancy, infections like Hepatitis C, or rapid weight loss. Your lifestyle and working with your doctor could help pinpoint causality specific to you.
