Pat: I workout pretty hard and I’ve heard that lactic acid is what causes my legs to get so sore? What is lactic acid? 

Megan: When you workout, your body uses carbohydrates and glucose so it breaks these down for fuel. This is called lactate. To be clear, it isn’t just working out that creates lactic acid, rather, it’s any activity that causes your body to use more oxygen than normal. In the short term, your body produces more lactic acid. It is flushed out quickly so the soreness you feel is likely more caused by the tiny micro tears in your muscle fibers that occur from workouts and the repair process that takes place to build muscle.
