Amber: When I had a cut growing up I always put a cute bandaid on it from my mom. Now, I’ve heard it’s better to let the cut breathe and not put a bandaid on it. Which is true?

Megan: As soon as a cut stops bleeding, for the first 24-48 hours or until a scab forms, it is a good idea to cover it with a bandaid. This is because the bandage will promote healing. Air actually increases cellular death, so we want to keep the air out at first. The cells will stay alive when covered and the bandage keeps moisture locked in. Plus you don’t want debri and dirt to get into the cut. Once a scab forms, it now acts as the bandage to promote healing. Then you don’t need to cover the cut any longer.
