Peg: What’s better for your skin, hot or cold showers?
Megan: For skin health, the best approach is to take brief five-to-ten-minute showers using lukewarm water that feels close to your body temperature. Hot showers feel incredible, but hot water is actually one of the worst things for your skin because it strips away your natural vital oils, ceramides, and fatty acids that trap moisture and keep irritants out. When high heat washes those protective fats away, surface water evaporates rapidly leaving your skin tight, dry, and prone to redness or irritation. Cold water isn’t bad because it constricts blood vessels, reduces puffiness, and can soothe inflammation. It isn’t very effective at cleansing away daily grime on its own.
