Jenny: I want to reset my body and my digestive system and I have heard that doing a cleanse can help with this. I see so many types and products at the store and online so what works or doesn’t and is it even safe or a good idea?
Megan: I would want to know in more detail why you want to do the cleanse, such as weight loss or irritable bowel syndrome? Cleanses when done safely can help flush out many toxins and eliminate waste products, but at the same time they can get rid of good bacteria and enzymes. You might feel low energy or be in a big calorie deficit due to restrictions of the cleanse. Truly the best approach is to just change your diet long-term and start to focus on clean eating all together. This will be an on-going adjustment to your digestive health and in the long run better serve your digestive system rather than shocking it and quickly trying to fix or flush something that doesn’t need to be done. Cleanses can also be dangerous if you are on medications and they typically cause more water weight loss than anything.
