Liz: I’m the youngest person at my work, and the women around me discuss having mammograms. What age should females start having mammograms??
Megan: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammogram screenings taking place starting at age 50. The American Cancer Society recommends screening starting at age 45. It is also important to have them performed at least every 2 years. You can ask your doctor what they recommend based on your health and family history as well. Having an immediate family member who has had breast cancer would put you at higher risk and screening early on might be recommended. Performing self examinations early on even before the age recommendations can be done to feel for any hard lumps or irregularities.
