Andrew: What’s the difference between muscle contraction and extension? I hear it at the gym.
Megan: When it comes to the muscles and bones, extension means stretching out or elongating the bone or muscle. Contraction is flexing or bringing the bones or muscles into the same straight line. You can also think of it in terms of size, meaning extension is making the bone or muscle longer (i.e., extending), versus contraction which is making the bone or muscle shorter or compressed together. In the bicep curl movement, extension is when the arm is down, while contraction is when you are bringing the weight towards the arms.
