Assembly member Waldron -Invest in Water Storage Now

Marie Waldron, State Assemblymember —  Despite California being in the 3rd year of severe drought, there’s no urgency in the Governor’s May Revision to resolve our state’s persistent drought problems.

In 2014, voters approved $2.7 billion for investments in water storage but not one project has begun construction and the legislature has refused to fast track these projects or provide additional funding to address the long-term impacts of drought.

The fact that California built a system of reservoirs and aqueducts to support a population of 40 million and some of the most productive farmland in the world is a miracle but those historic achievements have not been matched in recent years and the Governor’s May Revision doesn’t come close to meeting the moment.

Despite a projected budget surplus of $97.5 billion, there is no additional funding in the May Revision for water storage investments, except for a passing reference to “$500 million for strategic water storage investments” and that money is not even contemplated until 2025-26. Why wait? Now is the time to build the infrastructure needed to increase our state’s ability to store water and ensure our farmers, businesses, and residents have access to an abundance of water for generations to come.

Sincerely,  Marie Waldron
