before i die

Before I Die Wall  at Alley Art Festival This Saturday  For the third year in a row, Vista’s own Before I Die Wall will return to Alley Art Festival on September 3 rd . The Festival has become an annual event in downtown Vista. This year’s Festival runs from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.

The Wall is the creation of Stephanie and Peter Kuchinsky. As soon as they watched the Candy Chang TED video and visited the Before I Die website, Stephanie and Peter knew they had to build a wall.

Vista’s Wall is designed as a free standing, movable wall. It includes four small, individual frames with chalkboard that individuals can write on and then hold while taking a selfie. Over the last three years, the wall has traveled to different local events. The goal is to someday to build a permanent Before I Die Wall in the Vista community.

The first Wall was created by Artist Candy Chang. After losing someone she loved, she needed an anonymous place to help restore her perspective about life. After receiving  permission, she painted the side of an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans with chalkboard paint and stenciled it with the sentence,

“Before I die I want to_______.”

Anyone walking by could pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space. By the next day, the wall was full of responses. To date, over 1,000 Before I Die Walls have been created in over 35 languages and over 70 countries.

All are invited to attend this year’s Alley Art Festival, contemplate the meaning of life and leave their personal message on Vista’s Wall.
