San Marcos, CA -March, 2024 —Palomar College’s literary and arts journal Bravura celebrates its 60th anniversary on the heels of receiving two prestigious awards. The 2023 issue of Bravura won third place in the Pacific-Western Division of the Community Colleges Humanities Association’s (CCHA) best magazine competition. According to the CCHA website, each nominated magazine “is judged holistically on the criteria of aesthetics, correct editing, ease of navigation, and strength of student work.” This year, not only did Bravura win third best magazine among a division of eight western states, it swept the individual published works categories where Palomar students placed in the top three for fiction, poetry, artwork, photography, and both first and second places for creative non-fiction.

In addition to this distinction, the 2023 issue also won the competitive designation as a Superior Magazine by REALM, an awards program of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Schools in 46 states and five countries nominated 375 student magazines for the distinction of being recognized by the REALM program for artistic excellence. Winning recognition as a Superior Magazine from the REALM in addition to the CCHA awards “is especially meaningful, since students run Bravura, and it’s an expression of their talent and hard work” says Dr. Stacey Trujillo, one of the faculty advisors for the journal.

Bravura, one of the few college journals that published its print and online issues throughout the pandemic, has been published every year since 1964. According to Dr. Clare Rolens, who along with Trujillo serves as a faculty advisor for Bravura, “Every year, students come together to create a journal that showcases new creative works, building on efforts from past generations.” The student editors of Bravura are excited to celebrate the 2024 edition and the 60th anniversary of the magazine, which will be celebrated with a Gala this May.
