Sacramento, CA -With the state facing a massive budget shortfall of $25 billion, members of the California Senate Republican Caucus want to ensure that the 2023-2024 budget proposal is focused on ‘spending smarter instead of spending more’ without negatively impacting California families.

Senate Republican Budget Committee Vice-Chair Roger Niello (R-Fair Oaks) and Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones (R-San Diego) delivered a budget letter to Governor Newsom and legislative Democratic leaders today, which outlines key priorities and is signed by all members of the California Senate Republican CaucusClick here to read the entire letter.

Below is an excerpt from the letter:

The LAO pointed out the following: “…in light of the magnitude of the recent augmentations, programs may not be working as expected, capacity issues may have constrained implementation, or other unforeseen challenges may have emerged. To address the budget problem for the upcoming year, these cases might provide the Legislature with areas for pause, delay, or reassessment.” We agree with this assessment. It is likely that we can balance the budget by cutting ineffective spending, or by halting previously approved funds that have not yet been actually spent, and thus balance the budget without negatively affecting the people of California.

The California Senate Republican Caucus outlined the following priorities:

  • Lower Gas Prices
  • Cut Costs for Renters
  • Prevent Wildfires
  • Build Water Storage
  • Commit to Kids, Cut Failing Projects
  • Tackle Crime
  • Empower Job Creators
  • Act on Homelessness

Senator Brian W. Jones was reelected to the California State Senate in 2022 representing the 40th Senate District which includes the Cities of Escondido, Poway, San Marcos, Santee, San Diego communities of communities of Carmel Mountain Ranch, Del Sur, MCAS Miramar, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Sabre Springs, Santa Luz, Scripps Ranch, San Pasqual Valley, Sorrento Valley, Torrey Hills and University City, along with the San Diego County unincorporated communities of 4S Ranch, Alpine, Bonsall, Dehesa, Fallbrook, Harmony Grove, Hidden Meadows, Lakeside, Pala-Pauma, Pine Valley, Rainbow, Ramona, Twin Oaks, and Valley Center.
