Vista CA – (MAY, 2024) – Campus Clinic, a pioneering management services organization committed to bringing barrier-free health services to school communities, is thrilled to be the recipient of a $749,062 grant through the Child and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) Round 5.

This funding will support an array of transformative mental health interventions aimed at addressing the urgent needs of students within the Vista Unified School District.

Thanks to the CYBHI grant, Campus Clinic will be implementing a comprehensive suite of services, including Universal Mental Health Screenings (UMHS), a membership model, an iHeart campaign, and group visits utilizing the evidence-based Blues Program. These initiatives are designed to provide vital support to students struggling with mental health challenges, fostering a healthier academic environment and community at large.

“We are deeply committed to protecting and caring for the mental health of our states young people,” said Thomas Shaffer, President of Campus Clinic. “This grant represents a significant step towards realizing that vision, allowing us to deliver critical services to some of the most vulnerable students in Vista.”

Through strategic partnerships and cutting-edge technology, Campus Clinic will implement its Whole Child Model across five high-need high schools within the district, including:

– Vista High School
– Major General Murray High School
– Alta Vista High School
– Mission Vista High School
– Rancho Buena Vista High School

This model, inspired by the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework, aims to identify and address mental health needs proactively, ensuring that every student receives personalized care.

One key aspect of this initiative is the strategic partnership with iHeartMedia, which will amplify Campus Clinic’s reach within the community. By harnessing the power of iHeartMedia’s extensive platform, Campus Clinic aims to raise awareness about mental health issues and destigmatize seeking help.

The urgency of addressing mental health challenges among youth cannot be overstated. Recent data from the California Healthy Kids Survey underscores the prevalence of these issues within the community, with alarming statistics revealing high rates of suicidal ideation, social/emotional distress, and chronic sadness among high school students.

“We are acutely aware of the profound impact that mental health issues can have on students’ academic performance, overall well-being, and future prospects,” added Shaffer. “Through this grant, Campus Clinic is determined to make a tangible difference in the lives of these students, empowering them to thrive both academically and personally.”

Campus Clinic’s initiative will target schools where the need is most acute, with statistics indicating high levels of socioeconomic disadvantage, food insecurity, and a significant proportion of English Language Learners. By addressing these challenges head-on, Campus Clinic aims to create a more equitable and supportive educational environment for all students.

Campus Clinic extends its heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to the grant proposal and expresses its commitment to ensuring its successful implementation.
