San Diego Museum Month is back! Take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy half-price admission during the month of February at over 60 museums in the San Diego area. All three Carlsbad City Library locations will distribute Museum Month passes while supplies last. Passes are valid from now until Feb. 28. Visit your favorite library location or sign up to receive a digital pass.

Presidents Day Closure-All Carlsbad City Library locations will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20 in observance of Presidents Day.

Celebrate Black History Month -Join us all February long to celebrate Black historical figures who made lasting contributions to society.

Fix-It Clinic

Schulman Auditorium, Dove Library – Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Bring your broken, non-functioning items: electronics, appliances, computers, toys, bicycles, clothes, etc. for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. We’ll provide workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you disassemble and troubleshoot your item. This is a family-friendly event. Reserve an appointment.

Friends of the Carlsbad Library Children’s Book Sale Feb. 13-28

Friends Bookstore, Dove Library, 1775 Dove Lane; Mondays, 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. & Tuesdays – Saturdays, 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Friends Bookstore, Cole Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive Mondays – Fridays, 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Friends of the Carlsbad Library will hold a children’s book sale beginning on Feb. 13 at both the Cole and Dove bookstores. Children’s materials will be buy one, get one free through the end of February. Bookstore Boutique materials not included. Check out the great selection for kids of all ages!

Exploration HUB

Come in and use the Exploration HUB, Carlsbad City Library’s technology lab and makerspace located at the Dove Library.

Sign up for a free class or club. Try something new. Classes and clubs are for patrons 13 and older unless otherwise indicated.

Intermediate Arduino: DC Motor 

Saturday, Feb. 11, noon1 p.m. 

Interested in doing electronics projects with Arduino? In this class you will learn how to create a spinning motor circuit with variable speed control like those used in an RC car.

Tinkercad 3D Design: Grocery Bag Handle 

Wednesday, Feb. 22, 56:30 p.m. 

No one likes multiple trips from the car to the house. Design a grocery bag handle with multiple hooks using Tinkercad 3D design software. Learn how to combine and resize shapes to create a functional device you can use.

Genealogy Programs & Services

Focus On: Ancestry Library Edition  – Two February sessions to choose from: 

Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2-4 p.m.  & Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2-4 p.m. 

Library Learning Center, 3368 Eureka Place, upstairs computer lab

Learn how to navigate the Ancestry Library Edition database in this genealogy computer class. Topics include reviewing the types of records available, tips on searching and how to use Ancestry’s card catalog. 

This hands-on computer class is for ages 13 and older and held in the upstairs computer lab at the Library Learning Center. A Carlsbad City Library card with internet privileges is required. Register here for a session. 

Ask a Genealogist – Whether you’re just getting started in genealogy, or need help breaking down a brick wall, you can “Ask a Genealogist” during a special one-hour appointment with qualified staff at the Cole Library. Staff will help you navigate the library’s highly regarded print and online resources to answer your specific genealogy questions. Fill out the “Ask a Genealogist” form to get started.

If you’re looking for a new online comics collection, try Hoopla! This eResource offers a best-in-class comics viewer, content is always available (no holds – ever) and access to 10,000 comic titles for all ages. The entire collection is free with your library card.

AARP Foundation Tax Help Offered at Senior Center

Carlsbad Senior Center, 799 Pine Ave.  

Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. – Schedule at the Senior Center front desk or call 442-339-2650. Walk-ins accepted from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Now through April 13 

AARP Tax-Aide volunteers provide taxpayers in communities nationwide with free tax preparation and filing services. Volunteers are trained and IRS certified every year to ensure they are familiar with the latest changes to the U.S. Tax Code. For more information, visit the Senior Center webpage.  

Programs for Carlsbad Teens

If you know some high-school age students who are into music or want to develop leadership skills (or both!), the City of Carlsbad has two great programs coming up.

Carlsbad Student Leadership Academy Saturday, Feb. 11, 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. – Heritage Hall at Magee Park 258 Beech Ave.

  • The Carlsbad Student Leadership Academy is an interactive program open to any high-school age students living in Carlsbad.
  • Students learn how to be leaders, self-starters and change makers in their community.
  • It’s a collaboration between the City of Carlsbad, Carlsbad High School and The You School, a local nonprofit.
  • Registration is open now.

Amped Music and Art Throwdown

Saturday, Feb. 11, 7-10 p.m. Pine Avenue Community Center, 3209 Harding St. Tickets: $5, presale; $10 at the door
