Join the Winter Reading Challenge today!

Now – Jan. 31 All ages, all library locations

The annual Winter Reading Challenge is back and it’s better than ever!

All ages are invited to participate during the month of January. This year’s theme is “Where We Come From,” celebrating the rich and unique tapestry of backgrounds that make up our Carlsbad community. Read at least 240 minutes and earn a $20 Power Card voucher compliments of Dave & Buster’s in Carlsbad while supplies last (location: 2501 El Camino Real).

Carlsbad Reads Together 2024Adult Selection 

April 2024 – Carlsbad City Library

Selected with help from the Carlsbad community, New York Times #1 Best Seller “The Maid” will be the 2024 book selection for Carlsbad Reads Together, our community-wide program where everyone reads the same book at the same time!

Described as Carlsbad’s biggest book club, Carlsbad Reads Together is an annual celebration that connects the community through reading books and participating in programs and events to discuss them. For more program information, please visit our website.

Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention

Starting January 31 (program runs for 12 weeks)

Every Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

Georgina Cole Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive

Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention has been shown to improve balance and mobility and reduce the risk of falls. People of all ability levels are welcome. This class can be conducted from a seated or standing position.

Focus On: African American Genealogy  

A Genealogy & Carlsbad History event

Tuesday, Feb. 6 and Feb. 20, 2 – 4 p.m. 

Carlsbad City Library Learning Center, upstairs computer lab -3368 Eureka Place

Join us in honoring Black History Month at our Focus On: African American Genealogy. We will teach you about various resources that aid in the research, study and exploration of African American history and genealogy. Register for a session or visit Genealogy Services for more information.  

In the Pages of History: A Black History month event with Dr. Breanna J. McDaniel

Thursday, Feb. 8, 6 – 7 p.m. Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane, Schulman Auditorium, 1775 Dove Lane

Celebrate Black History Month by joining us to hear award-winning author Breanna J. McDaniel discuss her new book, “Go Forth and Tell: The Life of Augusta Baker, Librarian and Master Storyteller.” All ages and families are welcome. For more information, please visit our website.

Jeffrey Blount & Piper Huguley Author Event 

Saturday, Feb. 17, 1 p.m.

Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane, Schulman Auditorium, 1775 Dove Lane

Join us to hear celebrated NBC news anchor Jeffrey Blount discuss his new book “Mr. Jimmy from Around the Way” and Piper Huguley discuss her book “By Her Own Design” about the African-American dress designer who created Jackie Onassis’ wedding dress.

Local Author Fair

Are you a local author living in San Diego County? The Carlsbad City Library is excited to announce the Local Author Fair on June 1, 2 – 3 p.m. in the Kulchin Courtyard at the Carlsbad City Library of Dove Lane.

The Local Author Fair is a chance for authors residing in San Diego County to promote their books. Submissions will be accepted until March 1. Learn how to participate here. Contact librarian@carlsbadca.gov if you have any questions. 

DNA Interest Group 

A Genealogy & Carlsbad History event

Saturday, Feb. 17, 1 – 3 p.m.

Join us for a DNA Interest Group hosted by the North San Diego County Genealogical Society on how to interpret your DNA results and use DNA testing for genealogical purposes. The DNA Interest Group is open to people with all computer and genealogy experience levels.
