Help strengthen design standards in Village and Barrio

Carlsbad, CA –The city is looking for residents who live in the Village and Barrio who would be interested in serving on a citizens committee that will help turn existing design standards for multifamily and mixed-use projects in the Village and Barrio into “objective design standards.”
Under new state housing laws, creating objective design standards is one way cities can retain influence over new development.
Committee makeupApplications are currently being accepted for the following committee positions:
- Two Village residents
- Two Barrio residents
- A downtown business owner
- Two people with experience developing multifamily housing and/or mixed-use projects in Carlsbad
The committee will meet approximately three times over one year and will also include a member of the city’s Planning Commission and a member of the Historic Preservation Commission. Citizen committee members will be appointed by the City Council.
EligibilityAll committee members must be City of Carlsbad residents and registered voters. Village and Barrio members must be residents of the Village or Barrio area (map is included in the vacancy notice). Additional guidelines for serving on the committee are available on the city website.
Key dates
- Feb. 7, 2022: Applications must be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office by noon
- March 2022: Committee expected to be formed
- Summer 2023: Project scheduled for completion
The project to create objective design standards will not include changes to existing objective design standards such as building heights or setbacks. It also only applies to future condos, apartments and mixed-used projects.
Public involvementIn addition to the committee’s work, which will be conducted in public with opportunities for community input, community members will have other opportunities to share feedback, such as an online survey and public meetings. Once a draft of the design standards is ready, it will also be available for public review and comment.
