“Your talent determines what you can do. Your motivation determines how much you are willing to do. Your attitude determines how well you do it.” – Lou Holtz

I’m not a big “New Year’s Resolution” kind of guy.  I think choosing to do something simply because the calendar turns is a solid recipe for failure.  I need more incentive than that to trigger my dedication to a task.  Plus, “discipline” is not my strong suit, so there you go!

I had lunch with a friend and new incoming member, Everett, who encouraged me that the key to discipline is consistency and that the key to consistency is starting with small, easily attainable goals, thereby creating a habit.  With that in mind, this afternoon, I will begin trekking around the neighborhood with a 10-minute walk.  My goal is to do it on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

I don’t expect to feel anything magical from a 10-minute walk but I am hoping to create a habit through consistency.  Once that happens, I can increase distance and time.  Also, sharing it here with over 1,000 of my closest friends will keep me accountable.  🙂

The New Year’s timing is a coincidence.  Having lunch with a friend was inspiring.

Paul Eckert, Jr.
Last week (January 4th), we lost our fellow Elk, Paul Eckert, Jr.  I point this out because Paul was a charter member of Vista Elks Lodge #1968… the last charter member with an unbroken membership in our Lodge since July of 1955.
For comparison sake, new members at our Lodge get numbers in the 7200 range.  Paul’s membership number was 38!

Paul was a business owner here in north county, San Diego County Supervisor, and Past Exalted Ruler of Vista Elks Lodge.  A few weeks ago I interviewed Paul via Zoom and uploaded it to our YouTube page.  I encourage you to check out the video by clicking here.

Rest in peace, Paul.  “Elks are never forgotten, never forsaken.”

Needing Rental Coordinators
We are looking for 2-3 meticulous and thorough members that are willing to be trained as Rental Coordinators.  You would be working with our rental customers to ensure a positive experience for the renter while protecting the facility, liability, and interests of the Lodge.

You would be trained by our Activities and Rentals Chairman, Sharon Heyden, as well as our Food & Beverage staff.  You will also need access to a computer (a laptop is best) and a smartphone.  Our calendar and files are accessed through Google Drive and we email a lot so you will want to feel comfortable with being online!  Compensation for the Rental Coordinator is built into the rental contract.

For more information text Sharon Heyden at 760-212-2029.

Parking in Assigned Spots
Just a reminder folks… please do not park in assigned spots unless the spot is assigned to you.  Recently, our Elks of the Month have not been able to park in their spot because others have parked there.

These assigned spots are clearly marked.  Thanks for complying!

Tuesday
Have you been to our Tuesday dinners yet?  They’re pretty popular!  Join us this Tuesday when we will be serving an open-faced Roast Beef sandwich, mashed taters with gravy, and green beans. Just $10!

Dinner is served from 5-7pm while supplies last.  Our Social Quarters opens early and live music is provided by Restless Natives.

Have a great week!
ER David
