Monday, August 30, 2021Monday Mourning “Tears shed for another person are not a sign of weakness. They are a sign of a pure heart.” – José N. Harris Last week, 13 U.S. service men and women were killed in Afghanistan. They are thirteen in a long list of names of fallen servicemen who have given their lives in the Middle East. We morn as a nation. We morn as a military community. We morn as Elks who value and honor the sacrifices of our military. And some morn as a family dealing with their loss of a loved one. There are many things we cannot understand, many things that I chose to not discuss in this forum. What remains is that there are 13 new “angels” in heaven. Thirteen men and women who signed their name to a blank check payable with their lives. Thirteen souls that are sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles. And countless hearts grieving their loss. There are far too many “angels” in heaven. CHEA State President’s Visit This past weekend, the South Coast District had the honor of hosting our CHEA President, Jay Larkings, and First Lady Ginger, along with many Association Vice Presidents and their spouses. There were a number of events that took place over the weekend visit, culminating with the President’s Dinner Saturday night. I will be expanding on the visit in October’s bulletin so be sure to read it. I want to offer a sincere thank you, congratulations, and job well done, to the Lodges, ERs and volunteers that helped to host the events, including Poway Lodge, El Cajon Lodge, San Diego Lodge, and Chula Vista Lodge. And especially our AVP Phillip Byrd and First Lady Janet, who were the face of the district for the long and busy weekend, overseeing the schedule, transportation and timing of every event, ensuring all our guests had a memorable visit. You did our district proud! Thank you all! Purple Pig One of the events this past weekend was the Purple Pig Races at El Cajon Lodge. Let’s just say that Vista Elks Lodge, and our “Mr. Piggy” (aka Esteemed Lecturing Knight, Tex Perry) won HUGE! I will have details and photos in the Digital and Expended September Bulletin that comes out in the next 24 hours. If you don’t get the digital and expanded newsletter, call the office to get on the mailing list. The expended newsletter is full color and feature more stories than the printed version. It’s also available on our website (VistaElks.org) and on through the Vista Elks app. Tuesday Dinner Tomorrow’s Tuesday Dinner will be a throw back to the old diner set. Steve and James will be serving a traditional “Blue Plate Special” of homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, and corn. Oh, and a roll for sopping up the homemade gravy. This culinary delight from old Americana, will be served on a “Blue Plate.” Friday Night Reservations This is just a reminder for our Friday night guests. When you make a reservation, you are reserving seats, not a table. For example, if you place a reservation for two, you will likely be seated others, but that’s a good thing. It’s a great way to meet other Elks and make new friends! Also, we are no longer taking reservations for Prime Rib. It’s first-come, first-served. Labor Day Luau We’re just one week away from our Labor Day Luau presented by the Elks of the Year. Start Time: 11am (food served from 11am-1pm) Menu: Rib, Hawaiian Chicken and sides Entertainment: Hawaiian Hula Dancers Price: $20 Let us know if you’re planning to attend by calling 760-724-1968. Have a great week, friends! ER David |
