Peter Kuchinsky  -Sharon and Jack Mickelson started Frogy’s Donuts in September 1984, and have operated in the same location at 602 East Vista Way, Suite A, in Vista for nearly 40 years.

Hopefully you can stop by on both Feb 25 from 11 – 2 and Feb 27 at 10 am for her celebrations.

Jack and Sharon started their baking at 3 a.m. and opened the store at 5 a.m. and worked 7 days a week. The Mickelsons have delivered freshly made donuts with a warm smile and kindness to at least three generations of Vista residents. Customers love the “mom and pop” feel of the store and have commented that they are always welcomed no matter how long it has been between visits.

Sharon and Jacked lived in Vista from 1986 – 2018.  All three of their children, Melinda, Rachelle and Jonathan, were raised in Vista, attending local elementary and middle schools, with all three graduating from Vista High School.  The children were quite active participating in Softball, Marching Band, Soccer and Cross Country.

Frogy’s sponsored numerous soccer teams and Jack coached Jonathan’s soccer team for a number of years. They have been a long standing member of the Chamber of Commerce.

In 2018, they moved to San Jacinto and started commuting 52 miles each way to continue baking freshly made donuts for Vista. They would never sell a “day old”.

Jack developed dementia, but still loved coming into Frogy’s everyday. He loved that people would walk up to him and shake his hand… it made his day and kept him going… people were sure it gave him an extra year or so. Jack passed away in September 2020.

Since that time, Sharon has continued baking donuts 6 days a week and commuting from Hemet.  She has been assisted with amazing and wonderful friends who pitched in to help, including a few who obtained food handlers cards. Anyone who ever came in was welcomed personally by Sharon’s never ending smile.

She has made the decision to retire and close Frogy’s on February 28, 2024.  Sharon has nothing but warm memories of Vista, Frogy’s and her many longtime friends and customers.  If you have fond memories or just want one of Vista’s best donuts before they are gone forever, stop by to wish Sharon the greatest of retirements.

The Letter to the Editor below from the Vista Press sums up Sharon, Jack and Frogy’s relationship with Vista and their lasting impact.

LOOKING FOR HAPPINESS?

From the Vista Press June 26, 2016

Looking for happiness? Sometimes it can be found in a place least expected.  A well loved and slightly worn down donut shop where all are welcome and everyone’s opinion counts…

“If God appoints guardians at the Pearly Gate I want them to be just like Jack and Sharon.  They own Frogy’s Donuts in Vista, CA.  It is a magical place where all share a cup of coffee and donut with no judgement.  Here status, dress, race, income, political party, age have no influence or bearing.  Each individual is worthy of respect.  At least once a week it serves as a reminder to me of what the world can become someday. I love this place”. Unknown
