Dr. Megan Johnson McCullough -Body image, self-confidence, weight loss, and appearance, are daily thoughts many of us literally “face” each time we look in the mirror. The reflection we see, no matter what
anyone else has said, is our own interpretation of what we look like. The dilemma is that most of us want to look different. Being content with appearance is a forever sought-after game of never being satisfied. There are many procedures, treatments, and surgeries to help achieve the “look” we want, and one of these is called CoolSculpting. This is a non-invasive procedure that removes fat cells from the body. It is in fact FDA approved, and sales have been skyrocketing ever since this approval took place in 2010 Like any cosmetic procedure, there are pros and cons, and various interpretations of the word “effective”.

The key component of CoolSculpting is called cryolipolysis. The fat on the body, termed a “roll”, is placed between panels that have freezing temperatures. The cold breaks down fatty tissues. Eventually, the fat cells gradually die. The most common areas of the fat rolls people want to reduce the appearance of include the areas near the thighs, stomach, low back, and sides “love handles”. It has even been used around the chin. Cellulite becomes less visible after the hour-long placement of panels to the area.
Results can be seen within one to three months. Side effects might include redness, feeling very firm in the area(s), tingling, aching, and/or bruising.

Advertisements and media might have us believing that procedures like CoolSculpting are 100 percent effective, but truth lies in the eye of the beholder. After all, appearance is subjective. The good news is that CoolSculpting is safe regardless of the outcome. It depends on who is doing the research/study. Some claim 77% effective, some 86% effective, and other studies say there are too many variables to make this determination. No matter the case, what results that do take place, are supposed to be
indefinite.

Overall, compared to other ways to get rid of fat such as liposuction, CoolSculpting is non-invasive, and doesn’t require much recovery time at all. You can drive yourself, go home the same day, and resume activities. Pricing varies somewhere between $2000 and $4000. There are plenty of options on the market to choose from. How we perceive ourselves, be it for vanity purposes or not, does interact with our feelings of self-efficacy. Sometimes there’s not a cost to put on that state of mental and physical health if we can feel better about our reflection. Every individual experience varies with body image and the same is true for CoolSculpting. We must do what makes us happy as long as it’s safe and doesn’t negatively affect the people around us.
