– Unwanted bags & sag on the face
Dr. Megan Johnson McCullough – Having bags under the eyes seems to just be part of getting older. As we age, the tissue that surrounds the eyes does weaken and the muscles also lose their strength. The fat that is stored around the eyes then falls to the lower eyelid area. This cause and effect leads to puffiness under the eye. This puffiness can also be increased when fluid enters the area. This is rarely a sign of a medical emergency, rather, more an appearance concern as we all want to look awake and feel confident. Puffiness to this area of the face can result in dark circles under their eyes, swelling, or the skin looks lose. Although this is normal with age, other factors can contribute to the issue including allergies, lack of sleep, smoking, and heredity.
Most of the time bags under the eyes can be treated with self-care at home remedies. Getting enough sleep is important as well as trying to sleep with the head slightly elevated can help. Doing so can prevent fluid accumulation. The dark circles usually go away once the person wakes up. Fluid retention can also be caused by too much sodium, especially before bedtime. Cutting back on salt might help. Sometimes waking up after a big feast can lead to a food hangover and the appearance on the eyes can show this. Using a cold compress can also help making sure to apply mild pressure. Make up can also cover up the darkness. Those cucumbers over the eyes can work too. A nice warm bath with cucumbers over the eyes can aid that tired feeling and help with those circles. It is also important to remove eye make up every night in order to remove irritation. Cutting back on alcohol can also help because these beverages can pull water from the skin and increase the appearance of wrinkles. Keeping the sensitive skin around the eyes protected from the sun is also important. There are facial sunscreens, and some eye creams also contain sun protectant. Wear sunglasses too. The thin skin near the eyes does need a little extra attention.
Later in life we often think about what we could have done to better take care of ourselves. The reality is that although the damage won’t be completely erased, there are remedies to help. What we see in that reflection means quite a bit to us in terms of self-esteem and confidence. Don’t let a little blemish near the eyes impair your vision of how you want to look. Lifestyle changes and taking small measures at home can help this blemish stay away.
